Fast forward to when you’re 90 years old, sitting with your best friend and reminiscing – what would you regret NOT having done?
Those future regrets are your dreams for today!
It’s never too late to start living a life without regrets. You’ll only regret not having started sooner.
In my case, it seemed like I had it all. At 25, I had an MBA and 4 years of professional experience at IBM. I had made it into the coveted IBM100% Club for achieving my sales targets, I had a boyfriend who adored and spoiled me, with a vintage sports car and $20,000 in the bank with no debt.
But I was neither happy nor content. There was restlessness inside of me. I felt like a fraud – my success had come easily, in spite of a tough childhood full of trauma.
In the past, I spent six summer weeks in Europe and was enchanted with its Old World charm. My goal was to make enough money to return for a longer period of time.
Now was the time – I had the money but no one to go with. I could have stayed and married my kind boyfriend and had the usual yuppie lifestyle of two professionals making a lot of money in a stressful environment of Bay Street.
Or I could say ‘screw it, let’s do it!” like Sir Richard Branson’s book title states. I knew I would regret it if I didn’t take a little courage to just take the plunge and go ahead, all by myself.
I left on a one-way ticket to London, England to travel for a year in Europe. I ended up staying and working there for the next 9 years. I traveled from Ireland to North Africa, down to Greece, and east to former Yugoslavia, on business as well as for pleasure.
Leaving IBM and everything familiar behind was scary. But once I made my decision to stay and work in Europe, it was so much easier.
Nowadays, I no longer fear change. Change is a huge part of my life, especially since I returned to my hometown Toronto after 30 years. I have started five different businesses looking for that one last place to hang my hat. I have now found it as a small biz growth coach, watching people grow their businesses.
I always say you don’t know if you’re going in the right or wrong direction until you take that first step! Then you take another step forward, sideways or even backwards to start again. As they say, “failure only happens permanently when you fall and don’t get up”.
Before you start saying – “I couldn’t never do that”, read this post by Elizabeth Gilbert.
There is no one holding you hostage to living a life that doesn’t light you up. And you do not have to be confident or rich to do so. All you need is the stubborn determination that you will be happier following your dreams and inner passion than you would staying stuck in a situation that is sucking the life energy out of you.
Once you claim your power and feel true happiness in the journey towards a life of no regrets, you’ll wonder how you ever lived differently. You never know where you’ll go and the adventures you’ll have. You are so worth it – so go do it!
