How entrepreneurs can overcome public speaking anxiety

Most entrepreneurs need to wear different hats. Are you one of the many entrepreneurs who miss valuable business-building activities because you feel anxious about public speaking?

Keep reading to discover how to speak more confidently and clearly about your business without suffering from public speaking panic attacks!

When do entrepreneurs speak in public?

Aside from building goodwill and teaching others, entrepreneurs typically need to speak to the public for many situations involving clients, financing, and employees.

For example, to gain clients many entrepreneurs need to speak at sales meetings, speak to the media, and speak at events.

In addition, to get financing entrepreneurs typically are required to give investor presentations, convince bankers to provide a loan, and pitch to friends and family for “love money.”

3 Tips to help reduce speaking stress

  1. Research

Entrepreneurs can reduce much of their public speaking anxiety by focusing on how to serve their audience. Can you anticipate what your audience wants to hear and what they don’t?

  1. Breathe

As a defense mechanism, when you panic, your heart races furiously and your brain is likely starved of oxygen. A simple but effective solution is to breathe in and out deeply, again and again, preferably from your stomach.

  1. Prepare

As an entrepreneur you can reduce a lot of public speaking anxiety if you don’t try to “wing it.” All activities worth doing require extensive practice before achieving competency, let alone mastery.

Consider recording yourself on your phone or your laptop, rehearsing in front of a Toastmasters club or your work colleagues, or getting coaching from a speaking professional.

To recap

Early stage entrepreneurs often need to handle many responsibilities at once. Whether you need to present to external or internal stakeholders, succeed at your business by overcoming public speaking anxiety.
